What is a Memory Cafe?

Northam Memory Cafe
A memory cafe is somewhere where people with a dementia and their families/friends can visit to support each other and share information and experiences. Health, Social Care and Carer Support professionals are also on hand to answer any questions and provide support as well as signpost to other services.
The North Devon Memory Cafes are provided in collaboration with both voluntary and statutory agencies and local community groups and are funded through various donations and local sponsors/supporters.
The first cafe was established in Barnstaple in 2005 and since then further cafes have been set up in South Molton, Torrington, Northam, Holsworthy and Ilfracombe.
People who attend the Cafe’s come from all walks of life and are of varying age groups. Some people come along on their own while others bring family and friends alike. People who attend the Cafe’s continue to come along and value them for their: welcoming and accepting atmosphere; peer support; information; signposting to other services/agencies; advice and education; stimulation; a safe environment and coping strategies.
All of our cafes operate on a drop in basis and are open to all members of the general public. All you need to do is turn up and you will be welcomed by our staff and volunteers.
Details of the individual Cafes can be found on the following pages - just click on the cafe you would like to attend and this will provide details of when they are open and where you can find us along with a map.
In addition to the Cafes we have included a number of other pages which you may find of interest or helpful. We would encourage you to explore these and use the resources available. If there is anything else you feel would be of use to you on this site then please let us know using the ‘Contact Us’ page.
Thank you for visiting our site and we look forward to meeting you!
